‘Home’
They have such distinct stylings and characteristics that resonate with most families that this can be easily replicated and mimicked such as the work of Trish Morrissey is her set ‘Seven Years.’ By using period clothing, props and decor she is able the mimic the feel of family portraits from the 1970s/80’s in present day using common tropes we are used to see such as slightly blurry images, fingers over the lens etc.
I would have liked to replicate some similar kind of images with my own family perhaps focusing on the era of the 1990’s however this didn’t seem a practical project due to lack of access to the resources and props I would need.
I began to consider home on a much larger scale regarding something belonging to a certain place and more so when that object is out of place. I also wanted to look at travel and much like myself I enjoy to travel and can feel at home even being at new and unfamiliar surroundings.
An artist I have always been interested in that I felt I could incorporate into this trail of thought is the Dutch artist Florentijin Hofman who takes his huge experimental art installations and displays them in a variety of different places for all to admire. The pure scale of his work is really something to behold such as his most famous travelling rubber duck that made its way to Tokyo, Sydney and Amsterdam. A characteristic of Florentijn Hofman’s work is that he makes objects with things that we see or use often, including laminate flooring and flip-flops. With these sculptures, he wants to make people’s lives happier, and become unified. The purpose of his art is to promote the message of healing
After speaking with my tutor I felt it would be an interesting route to go down, to take a strange object or one you may not think of in an artistic way and display it in interesting places. I felt like it may be fun to visit places from my childhood that would really link to the idea of home and family and places familiar to myself and let this ominous object pay them a visit as I did.
